Gold, Silver, or Gold-Plated? Here's What I'd Actually Buy.
Let's be honest. We've all seen those gorgeous gold necklaces online and wondered why one costs $30 and another costs $300.
They might look almost identical in photos, but what's underneath that shiny gold finish can make a pretty big difference.
And honestly, I think more people should know what they're actually paying for.
If You Love Gold, Go for the Real Thing.
If your budget allows, solid 18K yellow gold is hard to beat.

It's 75% pure gold, and the best part? The gold color isn't just a coating. There's no gold plating to rub off after a few months.
Sure, it costs more. And yes, it can still get scratched. But if you're buying something you want to wear for years, I'd rather spend more on one piece I truly love than keep replacing cheaper ones.
Sterling Silver Is Seriously Underrated.
Here's my possibly unpopular opinion: S925 sterling silver is one of the best deals in jewelry.

It's real silver, not some mystery metal with a shiny coating. It looks beautiful, feels substantial, and doesn't come with a solid-gold price tag.
Will it tarnish? Sometimes. But that's normal, and you can usually clean it.
For a pearl necklace clasp or an everyday chain, sterling silver is honestly a great choice.
Not everything needs to be gold to feel luxurious.
Now, Let's Talk About Gold Plating.
This is where expectations matter.
Gold-plated jewelry isn't necessarily bad jewelry. I actually think gold-plated sterling silver is a lovely option if you want that warm gold look without the solid-gold price.
But here's the thing: gold plating wears off.
Maybe not right away. Maybe not for quite a while. It depends on the plating, how often you wear it, and how you take care of it.
But eventually? It can happen.
And that's okay, as long as you know what you're buying.
Personally, I'd choose gold-plated sterling silver over gold-plated brass or copper in most cases. Brass and copper are less expensive base metals, and while they can absolutely be used in well-made jewelry, I prefer having a precious metal underneath.
That's also why we generally stick with S925 sterling silver and solid 18K gold for our jewelry components at LUME PEARL.

So, What's Actually Worth Your Money?
My take is pretty simple.
Love gold and have the budget? Go with solid 18K yellow gold.
Want something beautiful, practical, and reasonably priced? Sterling silver is a no-brainer.
Love the gold look but don't want to spend that much? Gold-plated silver is perfectly fine. Just don't expect the finish to last forever.
And one last thing: if the gold plating on your pearl necklace clasp starts wearing off, that doesn't mean the pearls themselves are low quality. They're two completely different materials.
At the end of the day, I don't think good jewelry shopping is about spending the most money.
It's about knowing what you're buying, understanding what you're getting, and choosing something you'll actually enjoy wearing.
That's how we think about jewelry at LUME PEARL, too.
Good jewelry doesn't need a sales pitch. Just good materials and a little honesty.
